Colour Friday: A Vibrant Alternative to Black Friday

By Lee Franklin

Celebrating Small Businesses and Sustainable Shopping

As the holiday season approaches, everyone is gearing up for the annual shopping frenzy known as Black Friday. But this year, why not consider a more mindful and ethical approach to your Christmas shopping? Colour Friday, an initiative created by Holly & Co, offers a refreshing alternative that supports small, independent businesses.

 Why Colour Friday?

Colour Friday is an annual event, taking place on November 29th this year, which encourages people to buy their gifts from small independent businesses rather than faceless retail giants. Suggesting shoppers ditch mass produced products and 'big-box shops' who often inflate prices in order to offer you the ‘big savings’ and embrace the joy of unique, handcrafted products made with love and support small businesses who charge the same fair price all year round.

By choosing to shop small and local, you're not only contributing to your community and the local economy but also helping to support sustainable practices. You’re buying from a real person - often the person who actually made the product - and who cares about the individual buying it.

You’ll be buying a thoughtful one-of-a-kind gift rather than a soulless generic item … which means more Brownie points for a more meaningful gift!

There is just so much talent here in the UK with so many fabulous independent businesses to shop from, once you start looking, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

How to Support Small Businesses This Christmas

  1. Shop Local: Prioritise local businesses and markets, and discover unique, handcrafted gifts.
  2. Choose Sustainable Brands: Opt for brands that prioritise eco-friendly practices and ethical production.
  3. Support Online Businesses: Many small businesses rely on online sales. Explore their websites and social media channels to find special offers and unique products.
  4. Share the Love: Spread the word about your favourite small businesses by sharing their stories on social media and recommending them to friends and family.

By choosing to support small businesses this Christmas, you're not only making a positive impact on the environment but also contributing to the vitality of your local community and the real lives of the makers and their families.

Personally, we try and buy as many of our Christmas gifts from fellow independent makers. We already have our favourites whom we buy from regularly, but we also find new sellers each year on Instagram, Facebook, Google, Etsy & local Christmas Markets ( LOVE a festive market! It really makes us feel Christmassy! )
