How to tie a Rockabilly Bandana

How to Tie a Rockabilly Bandana - Top Tips for Styling Retro Scarves

One of our best selling products are our Rockabilly Bandanas, and we are often asked by customers for advice on how to tie them.

I previously posted a quick visual guide to a few styles you can achieve with our bandanas, but did not expand on how to actually 'do the do' so now I thought I would expand on this and include a few tutorials on how to tie a bandana, particularly for vintage style hair.

All of our bandanas are handmade (by me!) to 1950's dimensions. I did my research when we first started producing our bandanas as I wanted to make sure we were providing a quality retro headscarf which would serve as a go-to, one-stop item for retro hairstyling. The only way to do this was to go back to the original sizes, used and worn by ladies of the 50's.

Our bandanas are square: 54cm x 54cm and as such are super versatile and can be used for many vintage style up-dos and Rockabilly pin-up looks. Many bandana-like hair ties and head bands available nowadays are pre-cut and sewn into one particular style, which is great if you're committed to one look, but if you're looking for more flexibility and a true authentic vintage look, a square scarf is the only way to achieve this.

I personally never leave the house without a bandana. If there is not one tied somewhere on my person, I always carry one in my bag. They are so versatile! Not only can they save a bad hair day (even if that happens halfway through the day), but they can also add a layer of warmth, or shade from the sun ... and add a dash of sophistication when tied round the neck. I have even tied them on the handle of my handbag if I have already maxed out on accessories on my person  ... can you tell I love scarves ...?

Anyway, as I am not a great one for being in front of the camera and so many lovely ladies can do it so much better than me, I have chosen to share with you my favourite bandana tutorials from the wonderful world of the interwebs ...

Let's kick off with the queen of vintage blog tutorials, The Cherry Dollface. Here Cherry explains how to tie a classic 'cover all sins' turban style, plus some top tips for keeping the bandana in place!

And here is a lovely, easy to follow tutorial by Susie Brown, showing three easy Rockabilly styles.

As I said, bandanas are soooo versatile, this is just the tip of the iceberg really. There is a lot of fun to be had, so don't be afraid to experiment! A good bandana can easily become your favourite hair accessory ... and your best friend!
